Topic:Social media used by small and medium-sized enterprisesIncreasing globalization and rapid digitization across industries have led to greater international competition. Furthermore, the emergence of new innovations has created both challenges and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs have recently been attracted to social media applications to reach a larger audience, improve their relationship with potential customers, and retain existing customers.Although, SMEs are employing over 80% labor force and represent 90% of businesses, globally. Typically, in emerging countries, SMEs suffer from a lack of funding and potential opportunities for further growth, globalization, and technology usage, as well as other resources. Additionally, some SME owners avoid technology adoption due to a lack of training, and the fact that many forms of social media exist on how to engage with them. Further, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, globally SMEs have been more affected than large organizations, experiencing interruptions in supply chains, human mobility restrictions, large decreases in capacity utilization and customer demand for products and services, and a reduction in labor supply, and self-isolation.Nowadays, SMEs can adopt social media because of its low cost, technical manageability and ease of use, and its ability to connect with many potential consumers. In addition, social media is a popular choice for SMEs because it enables clear communication, allowing firms to understand customer needs and respond competently and proactively to these needs. Besides, social media is also a comparatively inexpensive choice for analytics, conversion tracking, content management, automated publishing, and customer targeting. There are several other benefits of social media use such as it provides broader reach via brand engagement, access to global markets through a virtual environment, and appeals to the SMEs’ executives in relation to visualizing and considering the distance, time, and geographic locations. Furthermore, social media usage by SMEs is regarded as crucial in entrepreneurship and business studies. It also enables SMEs to maintain their competitive position by strengthening customer relationships, with a positive impact on sales performance.
