Professor Parente will discuss the new incentives and limitations of the health insurance and financial services industry. A particular focus will be on the pros and cons of insured versus cash payment for medical services as experience in markets across the globe.

Stephen T Parente

Professor Parente has a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. He has been the principal investigator on large funded studies regarding consumer-directed health plans, health information technology, and health policy micro-simulation. From 2019 to 2021, he served as Chief Economist for Health Policy and Senior Economist on the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President at the White House in Washington, DC. Previously, he was Senior Adviser to the Secretary for Health Economics in the Department of Health and Human Services, Vice-Chair of Academy Health, and the Governing Chair of the Health Care Cost Institute from 2013 to 2017. Heis the Founding Director of the Medical Valuation Laboratory, a nine-college interdisciplinary effort to accelerate medical innovation from scientists, clinicians, and entrepreneurs.Dr. Parente was a health policy advisor for the McCain 2008 Presidential Campaign and served as Legislative Fellow in the office of Senator John D. Rockefeller IV (D‑WV) in 1992/93.

中山大学岭南学院金融系教授、博士生导师，非全日制保险专业硕士项目主任，中国社会保障学会理事、青年委员会委员，美国波士顿大学和布兰迪斯大学访问学者，主要研究领域为社会保障、医疗保险与卫生政策，相关研究成果发表在《Oxford Handbook of Retirement》《管理世界》《世界经济》《金融研究》《统计研究》等核心刊物上，多篇被《新华文摘》、人大复印报刊资料转载，入选《复印报刊资料重要转载来源作者（2022年版）》，主持国家自然科学基金和国家社科基金项目，以及多项政府部门委托课题，参与多项国家社科基金重大重点项目。
