How to Effectively Select an International MBA?

Local or regional MBA programmes are easier to research, usually because they are limited in number, better known locally and easily accessible. It is much more challenging to identify the best MBA s for you amongst the thousands of international offerings.

While it is good news that there is a rich diversity of MBAs in terms of curriculum (general management and specialised), delivery format and schedule (full-time, part-time, modular, weekend, online), price (10,000 – 100,000 Euro) and scholarships (up to 100%), class diversity, international immersion options (from 1 week to full semester abroad) and career services, it is actually quite challenging and time consuming to research and identify which is the best one for you.

Short listing the MBA programmes is a crucial step which has a direct impact on your prospects for admission, as well on your MBA and post MBA experience.  You need a structured and focused MBA selection process.

There are two approaches: do it yourself or benefit from expert advice.

In both cases step #1 (often not as easy as it seems) is to clarify in detail what you actually expect from and during the MBA. Make a list of your criteria and prioritise them.

Step #2 is to identify a broad list of MBAs which meet your criteria.

Step #3 is to fine-tune your selection and shortlist the MBA programmes (up to 5) to which you will actually apply for admission.

When to start your research

As early as one year or even more before you plan to begin your studies. The application deadlines are usually up to 9 months before the beginning of the programme and the application takes another 3 (up to 6 with GMAT preparation). So the earlier you start with the selection, the better. The earlier you submit your application package, the better.

How to speed up the school selection

The best way is to use independent expert advice about your school selection. Make sure that the expert you are contacting is not an agent recruiting students for particular schools or programmes. Only an independent consultant will work in your best interest and research all offerings to identify the best match for your profile, needs and post MBA goals. You can work with an expert for all steps – #1 to #3 – included.

If you take more of a ‘do it yourself’ approach, you can benefit from different school finder tools and searchable databases for step #2.  Before relying on the search results, check the number of programmes included in the database, the number and type of criteria you can use for your selection and whether the information is up to date. Then, for step #3 you can still use some expert advice to shortlist your school.

Also, take the chance to attend MBA One-to-One events where you can meet in person with the representatives of a targeted schools which have been professionally preselected to match your profile and criteria.

Of course there is plenty of information on the Internet, forums and discussion groups, but this approach is usually very time-consuming, and most MBA applicants are busy professionals already.
